Your message is important.
Your message can improve lives, and sharing it in the media is a powerful way to reach many. But are you taking full advantage of your media time?
The back and forth conversation within a media interview can be a powerful forum for sharing information about your book, product, or services. An interview offers an opportunity to present your message in a unique way. A good interview is much like a tennis match where you don't know exactly where the ball will go and if or how it will get returned from the other side. It can be fun to follow because it's not predictable. A great interview, on the other hand, is more like a beautiful dance—where the host and guest move together almost in unison, taking turns leading and following.
Whether playing the role of host or guest, creating a memorable interview can be both challenging and exhilarating, and when done well it can keep the audience fully engaged. And when the audience is fully engaged, you can create the greatest impact.

Coaching for those on the host side of the microphone...
I've been on the guest side of the mic for almost two decades and on the host side of the mic for nine, so I have some very strong opinions about what it takes to be an effective host. Early on as a talk radio host I focused on preparing with the guest's material, and then during the interview I focused on asking the right questions and timing the show segments properly. As I developed further as a host, I thought quality hosting was very much about holding up my end of the conversation so that there could be balance and depth. But after all these years I now have a different perspective. Yes, it is about preparation and timing and questions and conversation, but it is so much more than that! I believe that the best hosts know all the tricks about being a good guest and strategically navigate the conversation to compensate for the guest's weaknesses. It's a wonderful but sometimes difficult dance for the host to lead, but when it is done well there is on-air magic! |
I never thought that I would be on the host side of the microphone and was kind of dragged into it initially so many years ago. But now I love hosting my own show, and based on feedback from guests—including many big names who have done thousands of interviews—I'm doing something right. I've had guests and listeners alike suggest that I teach others how to become better interviewers. I've also had show hosts reach out to me to arrange for coaching even when it wasn't a service I offered. So, despite never planning on going this direction, I now share my knowledge with other podcast hosts through interviewer coaching.
